✏ IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: The buddy system is now MANDATORY for all students walking to and from school. Students must walk in groups of at least two. Parents are strongly encouraged to arrange carpools where possible.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY: All after-school programs are suspended until further notice. This includes:
  • Latchkey program
  • Tutoring sessions
  • After-school sports practice (except varsity)
  • Drama Club rehearsals
  • Science Olympiad

School counselors are available for students affected by recent events. Contact Mrs. Thomas at extension 14 (Derry Elementary) or Mr. Schenck at extension 23 (Derry High).

A MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL ANDERSON:

Dear Parents and Guardians,

    As we head into the fall season, I want to remind every family in our community about the importance of safety first. Our students must never walk home alone. The buddy system is not optional - it is mandatory until further notice.

    The playground area behind the school, near the edge of The Barrens, is closed for repairs. Please instruct your children to use the front playground only. The fencing along the back of the property has been damaged again and we are awaiting repairs from the town.

    If your child reports seeing a stranger near school grounds, please call the school office immediately at (207) 555-0150 and do not delay. We take every report seriously.

PTA Meeting: Thursday, October 20th at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. Discussion topic: playground safety improvements and the incident at recess last week. All parents encouraged to attend.

Middle school students are reminded that the dress code is strictly enforced. No wearing of costumes, masks, or face paint of any kind is permitted on school grounds, regardless of the time of year. This policy was updated in September.

Fall Sports Schedule:
  • Football vs. Bangor - 2:00 PM kickoff (changed from 7PM due to lighting concerns at the stadium)
  • Football vs. Brewer - October 21st, 2:00 PM
  • Cross Country meet - October 22nd, Bassey Park
  • Volleyball vs. Old Town - October 25th, 3:30 PM

Homecoming Dance: November 10th, 7-10 PM in the gymnasium. Dance will end at 10:00 PM SHARP per the town curfew ordinance. All students must be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Drama Club: "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder has been POSTPONED due to cast availability. New date to be announced.

College Prep Night: November 3rd, 6:30 PM in the cafeteria. Representatives from the University of Maine, Bates, and Bowdoin will be present. Free pizza for attendees.

Reminder: Several students have reported seeing "a tall man" near the bleachers after dark. Security has been increased. Please do not stay on school grounds after dismissal. If you see anything unusual, contact the school office immediately.

💣 SCHOOL SAFETY POLICIES

1. BUDDY SYSTEM
    All students K-12 must travel in groups of at least TWO when walking to or from school. This applies to before and after school hours.

2. BUS ROUTE CHANGES
    Routes 7 and 12 have been rerouted due to road closures near The Barrens. New stop locations have been mailed to affected families. Please contact transportation at ext. 18 with questions.

3. BUILDING ACCESS
    All exterior doors are LOCKED during school hours. Visitors must present photo ID and sign in at the main office. NO EXCEPTIONS.

4. THE BARRENS
    Students are PROHIBITED from entering the wooded area behind the school (The Barrens). Violators face SUSPENSION.

5. STRANGER POLICY
    If a student is approached by a stranger - especially one in costume or unusual clothing - they should run to the nearest adult or business and call 911 immediately.

6. STORM DRAIN POLICY
    Students are FORBIDDEN from approaching storm drains, sewer grates, or drainage culverts on or near school property. Lost items will be retrieved by the DPW only.

Note: 14 students have transferred out of the Derry School District since August 1994. Records have been forwarded to the appropriate districts.
